February Marks National Children's Dental Health Month

At Moles Orthodontics, February is National Children's Dental Health Month, as well as National Dental Health Month, and Dr. Moles and team thought we’d promote good oral hygiene among our patients with a few tips and tricks, courtesy of the American Dental Association.

• Teeth brushing techniques: It takes only two minutes to properly brush using short, gentle strokes and devoting extra attention to the gumline, areas around fillings and hard-to-reach areas such as the back teeth.

• Flossing: hold the floss snugly between thumbs and index finger and insert it between each of the teeth, making sure to go beneath the gumline and curving the floss around the base of each tooth.

• Snack wisely: choose healthy snacks such as cheese, fruits and vegetables and avoid crunchy, sticky, chewy candies that can stick to the teeth. If you eat these snacks, be sure to brush after doing so.

• Carbonated or sugary drinks: these drinks create acids that can damage the teeth when mixed with saliva, so they should be avoided altogether. If you’re going to drink one of these beverages, don’t sip on it throughout the day. Rather, drink it and then brush your teeth.

• Regular dental visits: in addition to seeing our team at Moles Orthodontics during your orthodontic treatment, you should visit your dentist for professional check-ups and teeth cleaning appointments about every six months.

"I'm 32 years old - am I too old for braces?"

At Moles Orthodontics, nobody is “too old” for braces! In fact, we read a fascinating stat recently: adults getting braces has actually jumped 24 percent since 1996! Also, one of every five patients in orthodontic treatment nowadays is over the age of 21. Of course, braces help make your teeth stay strong, healthy and become perfectly-aligned. Are those rumors about swallowing bubble gum true?

At Moles Orthodontics, we know the rumors going around – mostly among young people – that once you swallow a piece of chewing gum it will stake a claim and take up residency in your stomach for at least seven years! We really hate to take all the fun out of the mystery, but the truth is that chewing gum, when swallowed, will enter the stomach and move through the digestive system just like any other piece of food and leave the body long before seven years! So, if you ever have accidentally swallowed a piece of gum, there is no need to worry!

This being said, gum does not have any dietary benefits, so while it’s not harmful to swallow, you still want to avoid swallowing it. If you are a gum-chewer, make sure you chew sugarless gum, because gum with sugar can lead to cavities. Sugarless gum still has the same amount of flavor, but with less cavity causing ingredients. You see, when the bacterium in your mouth breaks down sugar, what’s left behind is acid. This acid eats away at the enamel coating of your teeth, causing holes that we call cavities. Cavities can lead to other long term mouth problems if they are not treated in time, so it is best to try and avoid overexposing your teeth to too many harmful substances!

The importance of visiting your dentist during treatment, from Moles Orthodontics

Are you brushing teeth twice a day and flossing during your orthodontic treatment? If the answer is yes, we think that’s great! But, Dr. Moles and our team at Moles Orthodontics would like to remind you to visit your general dentist every six months (or as recommended) in addition to taking good care of your oral health during orthodontic treatment. Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist can:

•Check for problems that might not be seen or felt
•Detect cavities and early signs of decay
•Treat oral health problems early
•Show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth

During an oral exam the doctor will check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, it’s time for you to schedule an appointment!

As the leaves change, we realize that winter is just around the corner. And just as the seasons change, so do the times. We are reminded that many families have been affected by the tough economic times who need our help. Each year, the Hunger Task Force faces the challenge of a growing demand to supply food for those in need. Please help us male a difference in the lives of of others. One can of soup, one box of rice, one jar of baby food, one dollar, will tell someone you care.

We're again joining efforts with Dr. Ron Nellen and his staff to collect food for the Hunger Task Force. Since 2006, they've collected 12,339 pounds of food and more than $4,000! We are so proud to be a part of this effort and we have set our sights on collecting 6,000 pounds over the course of 4 weeks in our offices in Milwaukee, Racine and Brookfield.

We will be collecting donations until tomorrow, and hope you will join us in helping those less fortunate than ourselves this holiday season. Together we will make a difference!

Ask Dr. Moles: What's the deal with Halloween candy?

For moms and dads worried about kids going overboard on sugar and other sweets, we know Halloween can be a dreaded annual event.

Dr. Moles and our team at Moles Orthodontics will tell you those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats can damage your teeth and braces too! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities!

Sour and fruity candy are the worst for your child’s teeth – these candies have a low pH value, which can ruin enamel. This Halloween season, try to limit the amount of these candies that your child eats, and when your child does eat them, either have him rinse his mouth with water afterward or have him drink some milk or eat some cheese. Or, try these braces-free Halloween treats!

What's going on at Moles Orthodontics?

We are celebrating Halloween in our office on Thursday, Oct. 28th, and we are doing something pretty unique - no costumes, but we all had a 3D cat image taken of us and our “skull” picture is going to go on an iron on transfer and onto a white T-shirt! It's all part of getting people to know we have 3D imaging technology in our office.

Also, we strongly support Lee National Denim Day and all staff wore Pink Pins and donated $5 to the cause to wear jeans on Oct 7th in our office. We support this cause annually, and will be doing so again on Nov. 30th to try and raise even more money. The folks at Denim Day also sent us more Pink Breast Cancer Pins and we're going to put those at our front desk (in our Racine office) for patients to donate $1 or more for a pin. It’s a really good way to get more people involved and aware about breast cancer!

At Moles Orthodontics, October marks National Orthodontic Health Month!

October is National Orthodontic Health Month, and our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have created a helpful website that provides important information on protecting your braces, including tips for trick-or-treaters, braces-friendly Halloween recipes, facts about braces and treats you should avoid while wearing braces.

Also, Dr. Moles and our team know there are many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through treatment at Moles Orthodontics, and these treats may cause damage that could prolong your treatment time. The AAO recommends our patients avoid the following Halloween treats:

• Caramel
• Nuts
• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Potato chips
• Ice

If you damage your braces, please give us a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved by calling and alerting us of the problem. Loose brackets or wires can usually be made more comfortable by applying some wax until the you can come into one of our three offices, located at Milwaukee, Racine or Brookfield.

What is Dr. Moles up to this month?

This month I'll be heading over to Poland and to Slovakia to give lectures on both Orthodontics and TMJ dysfunction (Jaw problems and headaches). This will be my fourth time speaking in Eastern Europe and as usual I am looking forward to it.

If you have never been to Poland let me assure you as a Wisconsinite you have already been there. If I dropped you off on a country road with no buildings around you, you would not be able to tell that you were not in Wisconsin. Literally, the land and the trees and the scenery are the same (and so is the weather!). It is an easy place for a Midwesterner to be comfortable in. Moreover the people are truly wonderful. They have been through so much and are so grateful to now have their freedom. They also love Americans and they look to us as a role model.

It's interesting to note that 80 percent of the dentists in Eastern Europe are female. Under Communism, dentistry was a low paying occupation so the men tended to gravitate to professions where it was easier to support a family. This is changing, and over the years I have seen more men in the courses. However all of the doctors that I have lectured to have been very eager to learn how we do things and they are quick students. They operate under a big handicap of not being able to afford or obtain some of the more sophisticated technology that we have available but given the vitality of their economies, they will eventually be able to provide this to their patients. I will share some of my experiences when I return.

It may seem crazy, but there are so many rumors out there about what’s good for your teeth, what’s bad for your teeth, what will make your teeth crooked, what will discolor your teeth, and so on. Below are are answers to some of the most frequent questions Dr. Moles and our staff at Moles Orthodontics always hear from patients. We hope you find this informational! Happy Tuesday!

Q: Which foods and drinks are actually healthy for my teeth?

A: Drinks: Water, Green Tea, Milk. Foods: Cheese, Celery, Kiwi’s, Onions, Parsley, Sesame Seeds, Shiitake Mushrooms, Wasabi. To view information on why these are healthy for your teeth visit this helpful article.

Q: Can fingernail biting cause damage to my teeth? What about lip biting or biting the ends of pencils?

A: Chewing anything that’s not food and is not edible is never good for your teeth and its enamel.

Q: It’s said that the changing seasons can have an effect on your body and joints. Can the seasons changing also have an effect on the way my mouth feels, especially during orthodontic treatment?

A: There is no research that shows any connection with the seasons and braces. Patients with braces and joint problems may feel joint pain and confuse that with brace pain.

Q: Can hard candies or hard mints cause damage to my teeth?

A: Yes, Most definitely.

Q: Now that I’m wearing braces, I miss chewing gum. Can I still chew sugar-free gum with braces on?

A: No, You want to stay away from all GUM. No gum is ever good for treatment. It can slow your treatment up, by pushing wires in the wrong directions and contribute to breakage. Gum can also make your jaw much more sore than it already may feel.

Q: Is a soft toothbrush or a medium toothbrush better for my teeth and gums?

A: Soft, always choose a soft toothbrush. Its not how hard you brush, its how long you brush.

Q: Are spicy or acidic foods bad for my teeth?

A: Spicy foods are not bad for your teeth, although you may want to brush your teeth soon after as it can affect your breathe. Acidic foods and drinks on the other hand, can cause damage over time to your enamel, and wear it down.

Q: If I play sports and use a mouth guard can constantly biting down on the hard rubber eventually cause my teeth to shift and become crooked?

A: No, you would need constant pressure to move your teeth out of alignment. (example: 12-24 hours of constant pressure on your teeth , will begin to move them)

Q: If my wisdom teeth came in straight, do I still need to get them removed?

A: Some people prefer to have them removed because they can be hard to keep clean, which can lead to decay and more unnecessary plaque and bacteria in the mouth. If they do come in and have plenty of room, its perfectly okay to not have them removed. Most people find in their mouths there just isn’t enough room though.

Dr. Moles, reminding you September is National Childhood Injury Prevention Month!

This month, our entire team at Moles Orthodontics want you to be extra careful with your braces and appliances. After all, September marks the start of fall sports and an increased risk to mouth injuries. September also happens to be National Childhood Injury Prevention Month, and Dr. Moles thought it’d be a good idea to share a few sobering facts about sports and facial injuries, courtesy of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists.

*More than half of the seven million sports and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by youth between ages 5 and 24. Collision and contact sports have higher injury rates—baseball, soccer, basketball and football account for about 80% of all sports-related emergency room visits.

*Sixty-seven percent of parents say their child does not wear a mouth guard, yet, 70 percent say their biggest fear when their child plays is that they will get hurt.

*Of the parents whose children do not wear a mouth guard, 84 percent say it's because the league or coach does not require it, according to the AAO.

*The average high school baseball pitcher can throw a fast ball between 75-to-85 miles per hour. This compares to being hit in the mouth by a speeding car!

We have one particular girl in our office who doesn’t get enough praise for the great work she continues to do everyday. She is Rebecca, our sterilization technician. To us, she is "Becca," and a part of our family here. She really deserves the praise around the office; she works very hard to keep up on all of our sterilizing and our trays needed throughout the day.

As assistants in our office can get really busy, we need her to keep things rolling, especially in the afternoon. Not many patients know she even works here or that we have her here to help us. So we’d like to thank her for helping us keep our practice rolling behind the scenes.

"I love what I do and would not want to do anything else. However if there was no orthodontic profession my guess I would have gone into plastic surgery since that is also an art combined with science. I was always interested in art and science as a student and I'm sure I would gravitate in that direction."

At Moles Orthodontics, we're always looking for ways to make our patients experience in the office the best they can have. We wanted to get a closer look at what the patients like most about our office. We get a lot of great reviews but we wanted to ask a few patients around the office that haven’t left a review yet, what they wish was different and what they liked most.

We asked some random patients in the waiting room “What do you like most about the office?”

One of our 14-year-old patients had this to say “The hot chocolate machine!” and “everyone is so nice to me.”

Another patient said, “I like the game-boys and the robot dog, bracer!” he is only ten and has 2 other brothers who love coming to our office to play with the robotic dog.

I asked a mother of two young girls that are currently going through treatment, and she said “My girls always talk about how nice the girl was that worked with them.” “I like that I can feel comfortable sitting and having coffee in the waiting room, while my girls are being treated in the back.” “I never have to worry about the treatment they are getting, the girls in the office are as knowledgeable as the doctors they work for.”

5 reasons to visit Moles Orthodontics this summer for a consultation

With the country still in a recession, many folks are putting off visiting the orthodontist for a consultation. We hear all the reasons - vacations, chores, emergencies, et cetera. Today, Dr. Moles and our staff at Moles Orthodontics thought we'd give our prospective patients five reasons to visit our office this summer for an orthodontic consultation.

1) Tooth damage - Unfortunately due to eruption or the bite, teeth can become permanently damaged without the patient even knowing that it's happening. The sooner it is discovered the sooner it can be stopped.

2) Growth - For some patients that need changes to jaw shape or position there is often a window of opportunity during growth when it is the best time to do that. Once that time has passed the correction becomes harder or even impossible.

3) Scheduling - If teeth need to be removed it's often easier to schedule before school starts.

4) School - Patients don't need to miss school if the examination appointment is done in the summertime.

5) Getting done - The sooner that treatment is started the sooner it is finished.

3D at Moles Orthodontics!

At Moles Orthodontics, we are very excited about 3D ORTHODONTICS! This is the combination of the SureSmile System which we have been using now for over 6 years and 3 dimensional X-ray scanning using the i-Cat system. This now allows us to see the actual movements not only of the top of the teeth, but also the roots of the teeth. Before, we were limited to seeing only 1/2 of each tooth (the crown portion). With 3D Orthodontics, we can now see the entire tooth, how it will move and how it relates to the movement of all the teeth around it (see the above picture).

In June, Dr. Moles attended the SureSmile Advisory Board meeting, a meeting of top SureSmile doctors who evaluate new changes to SureSmile and also give direction on what new modifications would help to make SureSmile treatment better for patients. Dr. Moles also attended the International 3-D Dentistry Conference in San Diego in May, where he presented a program on 3D Orthodontics and networked with doctors using 3D technology from all over the world.

Dr. Moles is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics and the American Academy of Pain Management. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics and is a member of the American College of Diplomats of the American Board of Orthodontics, World Federation of Orthodontists, American Association of Orthodontists, Midwestern Society of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, Wisconsin Dental Association and OKU Dental Honorary Society. He is also a member and past president of the Wisconsin Society of Orthodontists, Racine County Dental Society, and Primus Orthodontic Study Group. He is listed in Who's Who in Medicine.

To help keep our younger patients busy, we have GameBoys and a cabinet with children’s toys to play with. We offer an espresso machine in our Milwaukee office. In our Racine office we offer flavored coffee, tea, apple cider and hot chocolate. In our waiting room there is a flat screen that shows pictures from patient’s who have had there braces off, testimonials, contest winners and just upcoming events in the office. As always magazines, books and the newspaper is located in our waiting room as well. We currently has Wi-Fi hooked up in our waiting room for patients to bring their laptops and work on the internet while they wait for their appointment, or their children’s appointments.

At each patient’s appointment whether they are an established patient or a patient who has never been to the office, we make it a point to explain everything from the first thing we do to the very last in detail. So the patient feels the most comfortable with the treatment they are about to be given.

Either Dr. Moles or Dr. Ferri would always be in the office and willing to come over and offer there expertise on any procedure to ease a new patient’s worries before they get their braces.

We also started a new program in the office, called the Passport. Patients of any age can bring these with to appointments and earn stamps that go inside what looks like to be a real passport. The stamps can be redeemed for gift cards. And they can earn all different denominations for the gift cards. Stamps are very easy to obtain as well.

Patients will earn stamps for 1) being on time to their appointment 2) receiving an A for brushing. (brushing grades are A thru F) this help’s younger patients stay on top of their oral hygiene. Stamps are given out for a few other criteria once in treatment with braces. Patients are loving the Passport program so far!

We also offer tooth brushes and tooth paste to our patients to brush before they come back for their appointment to help keep those braces shiny and new!

The technology we offer and the highest quality of treatment we offer here at Moles Orthodontics is unmatched. We don’t settle for so-so treatment and really aim for the best result a patient could imagine! We want them to be in love with their smile when they finish with us.

Ask Dr. Moles: what’s the deal with flossing?

Flossing is so important! And these simple 6 reasons will change your mind and make you want to take the time to floss daily.

First things first, flossing prevents tooth decay, plaque left in between the teeth can cause decay even if you’re a avid brusher. Not to mention to prevent gum disease, halitosis, and tarter build up. Which some people are more prone to those three, that they need to floss more than once a day. In the morning and at night is recommended then. The last two are just as equally important, flossing aids in reducing the risk of heart disease and avoiding complications of diabetes. Scientific evidence has shown that a person with diabetes can see their case complicate due to gum disease.

We encourage all of our patients to floss regularly and even offer them floss and floss threaders to make flossing a cinch!

Taking ten minutes out of the day to really do a proper flossing of your teeth, can really save your gums, your health, and the people around you! Only brushing daily will not eliminate odor’s from bacteria lodged between your teeth. Which in turn even if you have brushed that day, that odor can still linger.

With braces and permanent retainers flossing is not an option. It becomes even more important. People with braces or other appliances in the mouth, need to be even more aware of the plague that will build up and collect on those appliances. Floss threaders work for both braces and a permanent retainer. We offer those in the office for all of our patients. They can even be found in local drug stores or super markets.

How do we "Go Green" at Moles Orthodontics?

At Milwaukee's Moles Orthodontics, we are always taking steps to be more environmentally friendly. We first started with energy efficient light bulbs throughout our offices. We took it another step further with water that is filtered. We no longer have our water delivered.

We also went from having all patient charts to scanning our documents from our charts into the patients computer file. This eliminated copies being made and possible cross- contamination as well. We are striving to a completely free paperless office. Were heading towards our goal with the amount of work were doing with papers and charts dwindling fast!

We have recycle bins in our offices in Milwaukee, Racine and Brookfield, and every one of our employees recycles daily. Even in the winter we try to keep the office thermostat a couple degree’s lower and a couple degrees higher in the summer months, to reduce the heating and cooling costs in the office. We do keep it comfortable for our patients though.

Everyone can do their share to start going green and protect the planet our future generations will be living in.

Smile for a Lifetime Foundation was launched in 2008 as a charitable non-profit organization. This national organization sponsors the orthodontic care of hundreds of children each year who need assistance due to financial challenges or special situations. Moles Orthodontics has three convenient offices in Milwaukee, Racine and Brookfield.

My staff and I are partnering with the Smile for a Lifetime Foundation to give the gifts of healthy smiles to underserved children in our community. Our mission is to create self-confidence, inspire hope and improve the futures of these children in a dramatic way.

Moles Orthodontics, reminding you to protect your mouth this summer

June is here, summer is nearly here, and for our team at Moles Orthodontics, that means it's time to once again remind our patients to protect themselves (and their teeth) while out on the field this summer.

To prevent your teeth from being chipped, broken or knocked out we recommend that all patients wear a mouth guard. Whether they are currently in treatment or had treatment many years ago. Invisalign retainers can help protect your teeth but we still recommend that your teeth are thoroughly protected by an actual mouth guard. When playing any type of physical activity or sports you will want to take your retainers out and store them in a safe place. Especially when you have braces you will want to wear a sports mouth guard, preferably a mouth guard that does not form to your teeth. The mouth guard that forms to your mouth will prevent your teeth from making progress and moving.

If you happen to have your tooth chipped or broken, you should call your dentist’s emergency line. A dentist can give you the options on how they can treat and how to go about fixing a chipped or broken tooth. An orthodontist should be called in an emergency if there is a severe problem with the orthodontic appliances.

Instead of recommending sports drinks, water is still the very best thing you can drink to stay hydrated during sports and physical activity. Water is always the absolute best for keeping your teeth and body healthy!

April is National Facial Protection Month, and during this time, Dr. Moles and our dedicated team at Moles Orthodontics urge our young athletes to play it safe when out on the field. Here are a few ways to ensure your mouth’s safety this spring, courtesy of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists:

1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator!

Our office at Moles Orthodontists heroes are our clinical technicians. Our technicians work hard every day of the week. Every one of them completes many different office tasks, from helping at the front desk, to the X-ray department. There isn’t an area in the office these girls couldn’t handle. On really busy days to accommodate patients, they will work straight through without bathroom or water breaks from 8-1 and 2-5.

The most amazing thing is they have been doing this for years and years without complaints. They put the patients first, and want the best care for them. Same goes for patients who run into traffic, or are just running late -- the girls will have to double-seat patients to make sure everyone gets seen on time. That can make for one hectic day.

The girls also make the whole experience for the patients better. You really get to know them and they get to know you. You feel like you’re coming to an office where your friend works. It’s a great atmosphere, and our clinical technicians make it that way every day.

Ask Dr. Moles: How do you keep up with the latest orthodontic technology?

Dr. Moles has always moved in the same direction as technology. As technology changes, our approach to orthodontics does as well. Our office embraces that change, because we want the absolute best treatment for our patients. Some offices are afraid to move forward and dive into something that may take more work, and stick with the traditional approach to orthodontics. Not moving forward with technology changes can leave other offices left in the dust, and their patients in braces for an average of 40-50 percent longer.

We not only changed the way we do orthodontic treatment, we’ve changed in all areas of the office. We’ve gone completely paperless, to help eliminate cross- contamination. We have updated our X-ray equipment, to the latest 3d Cat machine, which is really important because Dr. Moles has the best view now of the patients roots. That’s crucial when moving teeth. He’s one of only a few orthodontists in the area implementing this technology into the practice. Also, we have the ability to text message and remind patients of their orthodontic appointments, which they love. They can handle their account and make payments online as well.

We’ve also gotten our hands in the social networks. Our office loves Facebook and being able to share new pictures with our patients online. They get a better look at the office personally, not only professionally. It really gives people who currently aren’t with our practice a chance to see some cool things about our office and professional staff. It's really a lot of fun communicating online with our patients.

Questions, questions, questions...

From the moment patients enter Moles Orthodontics, they feel a sense of warmth, welcoming and individual care. Some ask Dr. Moles a lot of questions about their orthodontic treatment, while others choose to just "go with the flow." And that's understandable.

But for those who do ask questions, one of the most frequently asked questions is “Will it hurt?” and “How long will these be on?”

We explain to the patient despite what they’ve heard about braces - they DO NOT hurt to have them initially put on. The soreness will come later when the teeth start to move. Too often patients hear horror stories about how much it hurt to get the braces on, in which case they typically over-exaggerate. After the braces are on, almost all patients say “that’s it?” meaning it was actually really easy and painless!

Dr. Moles answers the other questions in the exam. When a patient comes in for a new exam, they are told an estimate of how long it will take to get that perfect smile. All other questions are answered at the bonding appointment, when the braces first go on. We cover it all from eating to brushing with the braces. It is VERY rare that a patient ever calls back with questions. Our staff is really thorough and always goes over everything. As a patient, that’s one thing they never have to worry about - they always know what’s going on.

Ask Dr. Moles: What does being an orthodontist mean to you?

Very early in my career someone said to me that being an orthodontist is like being a "slow-motion plastic surgeon." And as I think of it that is exactly what I feel it is. I have the chance to make life-changing differences for people. I mean things that not only make them look better, but that translates into them feeling better about themselves. And if you buy into the concept that how we feel about ourselves has an effect on our overall stress level, and thus our immune system, the possibility for making a difference in someone’s life is amazing!

Even as a youngster, I had always been a "helper" in some way or another and this profession fits nicely into my personality type. Moreover, as a kid I was a pretty good artist and model maker, and in that way orthodontics is really more of the same. I feel that I am really blessed, because orthodontics is like doing a hobby that you love and that someone pays you to do. So what could be better, doing something that's fun, helping people become healthier and to feel better about themselves. And at this time in my career, I am even able to share over thirty years of learning with the newer members of our profession, which is really gratifying and a lot of fun too!

Dr. Moles is a member of The Schulman Study Group (SSG), a nationally recognized association of prominent—among the top 1 percent—orthodontic practices. Recently, Dr. Moles was approached and asked, "What does it mean to you and Moles Orthodontics to be a member of The Schulman Study Group?" Dr. Moles thought about it, and here's what he has to say:

To be invited into the Schulman Orthodontic Study Group is truly one of the highlights of my career! I should explain why it is such an honor. To put things in perspective less than 1% of all the orthodontists in the country are Schulman members. Moreover, it's not a group that you can just join. To become a member of the Schulman group you must be invited by one of the members. Then you must present statistics on your practice to prove you meet the standards of acceptance. You are then voted on by the members of the group. It is definitely the best of the best study group.

During the year Schulman members are in constant contact, sharing all sorts of ideas in order to improve what we do and how we do it. Once a year we meet for a week, sharing ideas and having guest speakers on all aspects of orthodontics. I can honestly say that being a member of the Schulman Study Group has made me a better orthodontist and helped me to serve my patients better!

Southeast Wisconsin is truly a super place to live. Where else can you live next to a lake that looks like an ocean and have two major cities—Milwaukee and Chicago—almost next to each other with all the great things that come along with that. The entertainment, sports events, dining, and shopping are amazing in either city. With three major airports, it’s also easy to travel. Some of Dr. Moles' favorite places in Racine to eat are Sebastian’s, and The Waves. In Milwaukee there are so many great restaurants, but we got Dr. Moles to give us a few of his favorites, like Lake Park Bistro, Bacchus, Kil@wat and Three Brothers.

Our assistants love Joses Blue Sombrero in Racine. It is by far the best Mexican cuisine around. The wait there typically on the weekend can be very long—almost an hour at dinner time. They are very well known. The best place for shopping is taking a drive to the outlet mall in Pleasant Prairie, which is located in Kenosha. If you're looking for an even larger mall, Gurnee Mills Shopping Mall has over a mile of shopping. The mall is located on the border of Illinois and Kenosha.

But the best thing about where we live is the people. They are down to earth and genuine.

Some helpful Invisalign® tips, from Moles Orthodontics

We've blogged about the advantages of Invisalign treatment at Moles Orthodontics in the past, and today thought we'd share a few Invisalign tips with you, our great patients.

When wearing your Invisalign aligners, Dr. Moles and our team want you to ask yourself the following questions:

1. Am I eating with my aligners on? - These aligners are removable and should be taken out when you eat.

2. Am I drinking anything other than water with my aligners on? - Though it's not a necessity for you to take out your aligners while you drink, think about how sticky a soda is. If you take out your aligners when drinking a soda, you have a better chance of keeping your aligners clean.

3. Am I brushing before putting the trays on? - The aligners have both an inside and outside. Keeping the outside clean is easy. Keeping the inside clean is also easy: just make sure you've brushed your teeth before putting the trays on.

This year our office was voted by other dentists into Milwaukee Magazine's top dentists and orthodontists. I actually heard the news from another dentist who called and congratulated me on winning the honor. It was a total surprise!

I had received the mailing and voted a few months earlier, but I had not given it another thought. To have been one of only a few doctors chosen for this honor is a bit like winning an Academy Award in dentistry! Like the Academy Awards it is only by the votes of other professionals that one gets this kind of award. Needless to say it was a wonderful feeling to have been so honored. Recently, the team at Moles Orthodontics were asked, "What's new at your practice? What was so different about this past year?" Here are Dr. Moles' thoughts:

This was a super year to be an orthodontist! This year we became one of only a handful of practices in the world to combine 3D x-ray with SureSmile. This allows us for the first time to see how the roots of the teeth will actually move during treatment. This is a huge advancement since precise positioning of the roots is the foundation for the teeth and the bite.

When you consider that just a few tenths of a millimeter can cause a tooth to move, or fracture or even trigger jaw pain you can see how important this is. We also began offering SureSmile Lingual (behind the teeth), which is a wonderful option for those patients who want the cosmetics of Invisalign but have a problem that Invisalign cannot handle. One of the wonderful things that happened to our practice was that we were honored by our peers by being voted one of Milwaukee's Top Orthodontists. This is no small accomplishment since there are so many orthodontists in the area. Rest assured we will continue to live up to that honor!

Moles orthodontics with a reminder: Don't cut back on braces!

With the economic slump some patients will come in and ask "is orthodontic treatment is really necessary" or "how long can I put this treatment off". Of course orthodontic treatment is not a life and death matter—and sometimes the treatment can be delayed—however putting it off can be expensive, Dr. Moles says. The unfortunate thing is that crooked teeth don't hurt! That may sound strange but if crooked teeth would hurt it would be easier for the patient to feel the significant damage that might be happening.

There is a lot of "silent" (non painful) damage that can occur when teeth are out of alignment. A person can exert up to 1,500 lbs per square inch during chewing and beyond that the teeth come together around 2,500 times a day just in swallowing! If teeth don't fit the result can be excessive wear, fractures in the teeth, damage to the bone supporting the teeth and even damage to the jaw joints.

Much of this can happen without the patient being aware of it until something suddenly breaks. Also, crooked teeth can be very hard to keep clean, teeth can stain and decay rapidly. Unfortunately, the cost of the repairs can greatly exceed the cost of orthodontics. Years ago this was not a big problem. People simply did not live as long. It's wonderful that we are living longer! However, the old adage of "a stitch in time - saves nine" couldn't be more appropriate today. Investing in orthodontic treatment today can save a lot of money in the future!

What can you expect at Moles Orthodontics?

When you first walk in the door at Moles Orthodontics you’re greeted by the friendliest front desk, which eases peoples' nerves instantly. Then you're offered a beverage -- you may choose from a selection that includes hot coffee, tea, apple cider, hot chocolate or water.

While our patients are waiting they can view our flat-screen TV, which shows pictures of patients who have gotten their braces off. Seeing that gets patients who are ready to start treatment very excited! They see an outcome, and then can’t wait to see theirs.

Once we bring them back to the operatory, they notice it's a wide open area. This usually creates a safer feeling. They are out in the open and know everything that’s going on around them.

If the appointment is a little longer than usual, we offer video players for patients to watch DVDs. Or, they can bring in their own! The video player actually has a set of glasses with which you are able to see the movie. Patients love these!

The lights above the chair are basically a ceiling on top of another ceiling. This makes the lights easier on the patients' eyes when they are tipped back during appointments.

Another great incentive for our patients is that they are graded on their oral hygiene at every visit -- the more A's, the better chance they have to win. The winner receives a gift card of their choice.

At Moles Orthodontics, we really try to make the best experience possible for the patients, just as we would like to have at an appointment for ourselves.

A Braces-Friendly Holiday Treat, from Moles Orthodontics

This holiday season, Moles Orthodontics recommends a delicious braces-friendly recipe that is sure to be a great treat. This pumpkin cake recipe is a great choice for thanksgiving for people of all ages with braces. Plus, it tastes GREAT and is BRACES-FRIENDLY!!

Ingredients:

1 pkg yellow or white cake mix
1/2 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 cup canned pumpkin
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
Dash of nutmeg
1/4 cup water (add 2 tbl. of water if eggs are small)

Directions:

Put cake mix in a large bowl. Make an indentation in the center and pour in the oil and one egg. Mix using mixer at medium speed, then add the rest of the eggs one at a time, beating after each one. Add pumpkin, sugar, spices, then water. Bake in greased and floured tube pan in 350 degree over for 60-70 minutes. Cool before removing from pan. Makes a moist and delicious cake--no frosting required.

Patients can feel free to enjoy their Thanksgiving meal. But we would like to remind you there are a couple of offenders on the list of holiday foods. Here’s a list to help you decide:

What do we love here at Moles Orthodontics?

Debands. Our office absolutely loves debands, because the first time the patient gets to see their new smile – you’re with them. There’s one patient in particular who gave us goose-bumps. She was so excited for her braces and then even more excited when they came off. When I say even more excited when they came off- I mean she cried, and they were of course happy tears! She came around and thanked and hugged us all.

It just gave us all such a great feeling to know and see how happy she was, and how much it changed her life. She even keeps her before pictures in her wallet and shows people when they ask her about her teeth or compliment her. Seeing how much we can really affect somebody’s life by making a change in their smile is really fulfilling. It’s the absolute best part of our jobs here at Moles Orthodontics.

The average adult has about 28-32 - depending on - wisdom teeth. If they need wisdom teeth extracted - they have 28, if they are able to keep wisdom teeth they could have up to 32. Not all wisdom teeth grow in. Some people have all 4 some have only 1. It can really change from mouth to mouth.

We lose our first set of teeth basically because as we grow so does our jaw/mouth. If we grow permanent teeth right away as a small child, they would not fit and would automatically be crowded. They would basically be far too large for our mouths.

Teeth are made of enamel, dentin and pulp.

If you think you may have a cavity you should see your dentist right away before it worsens. You can usually tell or have an idea you may have one if the color of your tooth changes, or your having pain in an area or tooth you haven’t had it before.

People get cavities because they are either prone to them, bad oral hygiene, and too many sugary or sweet food/ drinks.

The wearing away of the enamel or large roots (sensitive roots) can make teeth sensitive to hot and cold. Enamel is the hardest and most highly mineralized substance of the body.

Wisdom teeth are just your 3rd molars. Typically most people have these and end up having them extracted, because they don’t have enough room in there mouths and the wisdom teeth usually crowd the rest of the teeth in the mouth.

Even if you have enough room in your mouth for them the dentist/orthodontist may still suggest you have them out, due to hygiene. It can be very difficult to clean around them and that’s a better chance for calculus/decay to erode the teeth and cause damage later.

Our teeth become discolored because of our daily habits ex: eating certain foods (fruits and veggies) drinks (dark sodas, coffee, teas, wine etc.) tobacco, poor dental hygiene, diseases, aging, genetics, environment, trauma to a tooth (due to a fall) and medications. So as you can see there are a lot of variables when it comes to how teeth discolor. There are so many factors.

Crooked teeth can be genetic but are not always. Crooked teeth can be caused from wisdom teeth coming in, grinding, and the way your bite is aligned. It isn’t always genetic.

Halloween is just around the corner, and that means lots of tricks and treats! Dr. Moles and team will be wearing costumes for Halloween tomorrow in our Milwaukee office, which is decorated with giant spider webs, and pumpkins! We have a few special safety tips to share with all of the young trick-or-treaters and their parents.

Always inspect your candy thoroughly, in these times we live in you can never be too careful. Throw out any candy that has been unwrapped, opened or tampered with. Parents should be inspecting the candy before their children have a chance to even eat it.

There are many different kinds of candies out there, but it is important to pay attention to the type of candy your children are eating, especially if they have braces! Soft candies, such as Reese's peanut butter cups, Milky Ways, and anything that is really soft is okay, but anything sticky, tacky or too chewy should be avoided. Patients should avoid- thick caramel, licorice, gum, chewy candy, candy apples, popcorn and popcorn balls, nuts and taffy's.

In the beginning of 2009 Racine’s population was 78,805. It’s a decent sized city to live in, not too large and not too small- it seems just right! Racine’s downtown is located on Lake Michigan and the area has been improving greatly over the past 10 years. New housing has gone up, new shops and great new restaurants. Racine has a lot of schools to choose from- about 28 grade schools and high schools not including the private schools. Driving distance to some major universities is really close, UW-Parkside, UW-Milwaukee are both within athirty minute drive. Racine is located between 2 major cities, Milwaukee and Chicago. This makes day-trips to Chicago for shopping and dining out great!

Dr. Moles favorite lunch during the work week- is from our neighbor restaurant Los Mariachis. He orders the chicken tacos w/ rice and beans. The office favorite is the local Q-Doba Mexican Grill, or Jimmy Johns. A new Gorgie Porgie just opened as well. The Restaurants in the area are all amazing. Racine’s Best Mexican is Joses Blue Sombrero, Italian: Salutes, American: The Corner House is by far the best in Racine and has been Voted that for American cuisine. The steak is their main attraction.

Dr. Moles has developed a way to give back with some other area professionals- its called Smile for a lifetime. Basically the idea of smile for a lifetime is that they are helping under-privileged kids in the area who cant afford to have a not only great looking smile but a smile that will be healthy and last a lifetime! Staying Educated at Moles Orthodontics

Dr. Moles is a part of The Schulman Study Group, an association of nationally prominent orthodontic practices from among the top 1% of all practices, follows the basic principles and tenets of practice management. With membership exclusively by invitation, has developed over the last 30 years into a nationally recognized organization of extremely successful orthodontic practices. The SSG members contribute management successes and failures at an annual meeting with an open forum format. The free-flow of ideas and brainstorming sessions offer participants the opportunity for expression and inspiration.

Also, Dr. Moles recently became a part of a community out-reach program called Smile for a Lifetime. This can be found at www.S4L.org, for more information. S4L offers a chance for under-privileged kids to have orthodontic treatment at no cost.

Dr. Moles makes several trips around the country- giving presentations and attending seminars. The entire staff participates in continuing education courses monthly. Once a year our assistants attend a SureSmile Conference, and get up to date on the latest changes in technology.

Oh don’t be so sensitive!

Do you have sensitive teeth? We at Moles Orthodontics wanted to explain why your teeth can become sensitive, and what you can do about it!

Tooth sensitivity is typically caused because teeth have lost some of their enamel. Beneath the enamel lies a tiny fluid-filled tunnel called dentinal tubules- these tubules lead to the tooth’s inner core, which contains pulp, the tooth’s sensitive nerve. If someone had dental work done recently- the odds are the pulp inside the tooth became slightly inflamed and just needs time to return to normal.

Excessively hard brushing can make your teeth very sensitive, and usually right hander’s will notice the left side of the mouth is always more sensitive, because they start brushing on that side, and that’s when we brush the hardest- by the time they make it to the right side, they usually aren’t brushing as hard. There are many other factors that contribute to sensitivity as well such as: receding gums, acidic foods/beverages, grinding, cracks in teeth, and loose fillings can all erode that protective covering, baring the ends of the tubules, and the pulp itself.

You can reduce tooth sensitivity by following some simple tips: use toothpaste recommended for sensitive teeth ( this toothpaste actually acts a filler, when the enamel wears away in areas- the tubules are exposed, and the toothpaste has a special ingredient that will fill those holes.) Also fluoride rinses, ibuprofen, gentle brushing techniques, avoid acidic foods and beverages. Grinding your teeth can also cause some sensitivity.

You can also manage sensitive teeth to still enjoy hot and cold foods or beverages with your dentists help. There is a procedure called Iontophoresis- in which an electric current is used to apply protective fluoride deep within the tubules. But as always the other ways of reducing your tooth sensitivity are great ways to manage it as well.

There are so many questions about orthodontics that we never ask, so Dr. Moles took some time to explain the most common concerns.

At what age should orthodontic treatment occur?

Orthodontic treatment can be started at any age. Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an early age before jaw growth has slowed. Early treatment may mean that a patient can avoid surgery and more serious complications. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child first visit an orthodontist by age seven or earlier if a problem is detected by parents, the family dentist or the child's physician.

What is Phase I and Phase II treatment?

Phase I, or early interceptive treatment, is limited orthodontic treatment (i.e. expander, Herbst, Facemask, headgear, or partial braces) before all of the permanent teeth have erupted. Such treatment can occur between the ages of six and ten. This treatment is sometimes recommended to make more space for developing teeth, correction of crossbites, overbites, underbites, or harmful oral habits. Phase II treatment is also called comprehensive treatment, because it involves full braces when all of the permanent teeth have erupted, usually between the ages of eleven and thirteen.

Would an adult patient benefit from orthodontics?

Absolutely!! Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age. Everyone wants a beautiful and healthy smile. Between 30-40% of our patients are adults.

How does orthodontic treatment work?

Braces use steady gentle pressure to gradually move teeth into their proper positions. The brackets that are placed on your teeth and the arch wire that connects them are the main components. When the arch wire is placed into the brackets, it tries to return to its original shape. As it does so, it applies pressure to move your teeth to their new, more ideal positions.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment times vary on a case-by-case basis, but the average time is from one to two years. Actual treatment time can be affected by rate of growth and severity of the correction necessary. Treatment length is also dependent upon patient compliance. Maintaining good oral hygiene and keeping regular appointments are important in keeping your treatment time on schedule.

Do braces hurt?

The placement of bands and brackets on your teeth does not hurt. Once your braces are placed and connected with the arch wires, you may feel some soreness of your teeth for one to four days. Your lips and cheeks may need one to two weeks to get used to the braces on your teeth.

Will braces interfere with playing sports?

No. It is recommended, however, that patients protect their smiles by wearing a mouth guard when participating in any sporting activity. Mouth guards are inexpensive, comfortable, and come in a variety of colors and patterns.

Will braces interfere with playing musical instruments?

No. However, there may be an initial period of adjustment. In addition, brace covers or wax can be provided to prevent discomfort.

Should I see my general dentist while I have braces?

Yes, you should continue to see your general dentist every six months for cleaning and dental checkups, or more frequently as recommended.

Imagining Your Life With Invisalign

Are you wondering what Invisalign treatment is really like, and what effect it will have on your day-to-day activities? Will it slur your speech? Will people know you're in treatment? You're not alone in your concerns! Following are a list of questions and answers for anyone pondering Invisalign treatment.

How exactly does Invisalign work?

Using 3-D computer imaging technology, Invisalign creates a series of custom-made, clear aligners exclusively for your teeth, based on the treatment plan that we specify for you. Each aligner moves teeth incrementally and is worn for about two weeks, then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved.

Will I experience pain during treatment?

Most people experience temporary discomfort for a few days after a new aligner is placed. This feeling of pressure is normal and is a sign that Invisalign is working by sequentially moving your teeth to their final destination.

Can other people see that I'm in treatment?

One of the benefits of Invisalign is that the aligners are clear. You can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing.

Can I smoke during treatment?

We discourage smoking while wearing the aligners as they may become discolored.

Are there any foods I cannot eat while in treatment?

You can eat normally during the entire course of treatment. One of the advantages of Invisalign is that the aligners are removable. Simply take the aligners out before each meal, brush when you're finished eating, then reinsert the aligners afterward.

What about chewing gum?

We recommend removing your aligners for all meals and snacks, as gum and other chewy substances can stick to the aligners.

How often must I wear my aligners?

Aligners should be worn all day, except when eating, brushing, and flossing.

Will my speech be affected by the aligners?

As with any orthodontic treatment, aligners may temporarily affect your speech. If this does happen, your tongue will adjust within a day or two and your speech should return to normal.

How can I clean my aligners?

The best way to clean your aligners is by brushing and rinsing them in lukewarm water.

How often must I visit your office during treatment?

For most patients, visits every 4-6 weeks are frequent enough for us to determine that your treatment is progressing properly. Dr. Moles will provide you with a specific schedule that supports your individual treatment plan.

While mouthwash is not an alternative to regular brushing and flossing, it can help keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy. There are several different types of mouthwashes available, and all of them will help do different things for your smile. The most common types of mouthwashes are:

• Fluoride - fluoride is the most used type of mouthwash available, and is used to strengthen the enamel of the teeth while preventing cavities and tooth decay.

• Antiseptic - an antiseptic mouthwash is used to kill bacteria and germs in the mouth. Most commonly used before and after a dental surgery, antiseptic mouthwashes can also help to fight gum disease, and halitosis (chronic bad breath). Antiseptic mouthwashes can affect your sense of taste and may stain the teeth, so it is recommended that you consult your dentist before using this type of mouthwash.

• Combination - a combination mouthwash is designed to help prevent tooth decay, freshen the breath, and maintain the health of your smile.

• Prescription - for patients with gum disease, or any signs of gum disease, you may need a prescription mouthwash. Prescription mouthwashes, like Peridex of PerioGard, are used to treat gingivitis, and other forms of decay.

There are also many different brands of mouthwash. Some common brands include:

• Scope
• Listerine
• Act
• Crest
• Tom’s of Maine (all-natural)
• Plax (anti-plaque rinse)
• Breath Rx
• Orajel
• Targon (special mouthwash made for smokers)

Softly Brushing Your Way to Clean Teeth, From Moles Orthodontics

Just as there are so many different types of toothbrushes to choose from, each brush also has a different type of bristle! There are generally three different types of bristles; hard, medium, and soft. We always recommend that our patients, especially children and seniors, use a soft bristled toothbrush.

Using a hard and medium bristled brush can actually harm your teeth and gums by stripping the enamel from the teeth and irritating the gums so that they become red and sore, and can even cause gum recession. If you do use a hard or medium bristled brush as a personal preference, we recommend using an electric toothbrush.

Soft bristles are much gentler on your teeth and gums, and while patients of all ages are recommended to use soft bristled brushes, they are particularly great for children, seniors, patients recovering from a dental procedure, and patients wearing braces.

Soft bristles, and even extra-soft bristles are every bit as effective when it comes to cleaning your teeth; in fact, if you currently use a hard or medium bristled brush, try a soft bristled brush next time you buy a toothbrush and we bet you won’t even notice a difference!

Why I Became an Orthodontist, By Dr. Moles

I wanted to be an orthodontist since I was 12 years old. I wanted to go into medicine of some sort, and orthodontics seemed like it would really be fun. Orthodontists make people look better and help them feel better about themselves. Orthodontics is sort of like plastic surgery but in slow motion! We now even call moving the teeth forward on older adults that makes the lips fuller a "brace lift"!

I really enjoy working with the patients and seeing the joy they have in their eyes when they see the transformation that has occurred after the braces are removed. For me, orthodontics is my hobby and I am luck enough to get paid to do something that I love. I'm very fortunate to have such a wonderful staff that enjoys working with people to create transformation in their lives!

Should you need to call Moles Orthodontics in case you sustain any damage to your braces, we can help you more effectively if you can tell us exactly which piece is in trouble! Here’s a handy diagram and corresponding list of all the parts that make up your braces.

Elastic Tie: Tiny rubber band that fits around the bracket to hold the archwire in place.

Archwire: The main wire that acts as a track to guide the teeth along. It's changed periodically throughout treatment, as teeth move to their new positions.

Loop in Archwire: Frequently used for closing space left by an extraction. Many archwires don't have a loop.

Bracket: Small attachment that holds the archwire in place. Most often, a bracket is cemented directly onto the tooth's surface, eliminating the need for a band.

Headgear Tube: Round, hollow attachment on the back bands. The inner bow of the headgear fits into it.

Coil Spring: Fits between brackets and over archwire to open space between teeth.

Tie Wire: Fine wire that is twisted around the bracket to hold the archwire in place.

Band: A thin ring of metal fitted around a tooth and cemented in place. The band provides a way to attach the brackets to the tooth.

Hook: Welded or removable arm to which elastics (rubber bands) are attached.

Elastic (Rubber Band): Small rubber band that is hooked between different points on the appliance to provide pressure to move the teeth.

Dr. Moles says: Baby Teeth – and Gums – Need Special Care!

One question we hear all the time at Moles Orthodontics is “When should I start brushing my baby’s teeth?”

You should begin regular cleanings even before your baby has teeth. After each breast feeding – or bottle-feeding – use a clean, damp washcloth to gently rub your baby’s gum tissue. You can wrap the material around one finger to make it easier to remove any food bits from your baby’s mouth.

When your baby’s first tooth comes in switch to a baby toothbrush. Look for special baby toothbrushes in your drugstore – they have just a few bristles and are very soft. There are even brushes shaped like finger puppets that fit over the tip of your pointer finger! All you need at this point is water – no toothpaste yet.

After a few more teeth appear, you can start using toothpaste, but you only need a tiny bit, and make sure it doesn’t contain fluoride for the first three years. From the beginning, have your little one practice spitting the toothpaste out after brushing. That way, he or she will already have the good habit of spitting when you switch to fluoride toothpaste, which should never be swallowed.

If you have been told you have periodontal disease (also known as gum disease or periodontitis), you're not alone. An estimated 80 percent of American adults currently have some form of the disease! Periodontal diseases range from simple gum inflammation to serious disease that results in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost.

Gum disease is a threat to your oral health. Research is also pointing to health effects of periodontal diseases that go well beyond your mouth. So we at Moles Orthodontics want to let you know some interesting facts and ways to treat the disease.

What is Periodontal Disease?

"Perio" means around, and "dontal" refers to teeth. Periodontal disease is an infection of the structures around the teeth, including the gums and the bones that hold the teeth. The earliest stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis – an infection of the gums. In more severe forms of the disease, all of the tissues are involved, including the bone. Bacteria that live and reproduce on the teeth and gums cause periodontal disease.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

Symptoms may include the following:
--redness or bleeding of gums while brushing teeth or using dental floss
--halitosis, or bad breath
--gum recession, resulting in apparent lengthening of teeth
--"pockets" between the teeth and gums indicating that the bone which holds the teeth in the mouth is dissolving
--loose teeth
Gum inflammation and bone destruction are largely painless. Hence, people may wrongly assume that painless bleeding after teeth cleaning is insignificant, although this may be a symptom of progressing periodontitis. If your hands bled when you washed them, you would be concerned. Yet, many people think it's normal if their gums bleed when they brush or floss.

Periodontal Disease Affects Your Health

Periodontal disease is a putrid, festering infection of the mouth. Bacteria and inflammatory particles can enter the bloodstream through ulcerated and bleeding gums and travel to the heart and other organs. In recent years, gum disease has been linked to a number of health problems. Researchers are studying possible connections between gum disease and:
--Heart disease: Gum disease may increase the risk of heart disease. Gum disease also is believed to worsen existing heart disease.
--Stroke: Gum disease may increase the risk of the type of stroke caused by blocked arteries
--Diabetes: People with diabetes and periodontal disease may be more likely to have trouble controlling their blood sugar than diabetics with healthy gums.
--Premature births: A woman who has gum diseases during pregnancy may be more likely deliver her baby too early and the infant may be more likely to be of low birth weight.

Combating Periodontal Disease

--See your dentist! See your dentist every six months for a checkup! Regular professional cleanings and checkups make you feel good, look good, and could be a lifesaver!
--Brush and floss daily. Take your time and do it right!
--Use an anti-bacterial mouthwash. Daily use of an anti-bacterial mouthwash helps to disinfect the teeth and gums, and reduces the number of bacteria.
--Straighten your teeth. Crowded teeth are nearly impossible to keep clean. Orthodontic treatment can greatly reduce inflammation and periodontal disease.

Oral Piercing: Is It Worth It? Moles Orthodontics Explains

Piercing, like tattooing, is one of today’s popular forms of “body art” and self-expression. If you’re thinking about getting a piercing – or if you already have one or more – we at Moles Orthodontics want to share some health risks you should know about.

Your mouth contains millions of bacteria, and infection is a common complication of oral piercing. Just touching your mouth jewelry (tongue barbells and lip and cheek labrettes) can lead to infection. Many people who have piercings tend to regularly touch them – which is a perfect opportunity for bacteria from hands to enter piercing sites. Also, food particles that collect around piercing sites can lead to infection.

Pain and swelling are other possible side effects of piercing. Your tongue – the most popular piercing site in the mouth – could swell large enough to close off your airway! Piercing also can cause uncontrollable bleeding or nerve damage. Damage to the tongue’s blood vessels can cause serious blood loss.

The hoop, ring, stud, and barbell-shaped jewelry can hinder your ability to talk and eat. Some people also develop a habit of biting or playing with their piercings – which can lead to cracked, scratched teeth; gum damage and recession; and sensitive teeth. There may also be a need for restorations, such as crowns or fillings, and additional dental treatment due to piercings.

Consider the potential pitfalls of piercing carefully before getting one. Keep in mind that it will be an added responsibility to your life, and will need regular upkeep. Make sure that you’re committed to the task of taking care of it for the full healing period and beyond.

At Moles Orthodontics we see lots of patients concerned about their bad breath. So we want to educate you about what you can do to really keep your chompers clean and breath minty fresh!

Naturally, good oral hygiene is the first set. With proper brushing and regular dental checkups you can keep bad breath (halitosis) in check.

Certain foods, medications, smoking, sinus issues, or even gum disease cause most bad breath. If the stink lingers for longer than 24 hours, you should see us at Moles Orthodontics. It might be something more serious, like dehydration, zinc deficiency, diabetes, liver failure, kidney failure, or even certain kinds of cancers!

In the meantime, here are some home remedies to keep you smiling bright from Moles Orthodontics.

--Spice Up Your Life
Snack on some cloves, fennel, or anise after each particularly odorous snack.
--Don’t forget the tongue
Lots of people brush their teeth regularly, but leave the tongue alone. One of the main causes of bad breath is food and plaque residue on the surface of your tongue. So give it a nice gentle brush-over too!
--Watch your drinking habits
The worst options are coffee, wine, whiskey, and beer.
--Frequent brushing
Carry a toothbrush with you so brushing after each meal is convenient and refreshing! Trust us, you’ll love the way it makes you feel. If you can’t brush, still swish around a couple sips of water to remove any lingering food.
--Make your own Gargle
Gargling with a home mixture of sage, calendula, and myrrh gum extracts four times a day should ward off that bad breath potential.

A Sour Smile Is Not A Happy Smile -- Moles Orthodontics

It’s no secret that sweet, sugary candies and drinks have an adverse effect of the health of your smile, but what about sour or tart candies? We at Moles Orthodontics thought you might want to know what kind of an effect does eating or drinking something sour have on my smile?

Recent research from the Minnesota Dental Association suggests that the amount of acid in sour candies is enough to eat away at tooth enamel and cause cavities. Here are a few souring facts about sour candies, and some helpful tips on how to protect your teeth from Moles Orthodontics(even if you cannot give up sour candies all together).

Facts

-Sour candies can be very acidic, and may actually burn the gums and cheeks, while weakening and wearing down the enamel on your teeth. (Check the acid levels in some of your favorite candies)

-It can take almost 20 minutes for the acid in sour candies to become neutral. Holding the acid in your mouth by sucking on sour hard candies or chewing sour gummies can keep the acid active for more than 20 minutes.

-The acid in sour candies can cause cavities and severe tooth decay.

Protect your teeth

-Limit the amount of sour candies that you eat on a daily basis, and if you do indulge, remember not to suck or chew on sour candies for long periods of time.

-After eating sour candies, rinse your mouth out with water, drink milk, or eat a couple slices of cheese. This will help neutralize the acid in your mouth (wait at least one hour before brushing your teeth with toothpaste, as this can actually increase the effects of acid on your teeth)

-If tooth erosion has already begun, ask your dentist about ways you can help reduce sensitivity and continue to protect your teeth.

Mooooooooove Over Gum Disease From Moles Orthodontics

We at Moles Orthodontics want to know is dairy a major part of your diet? If not, it should be! A recent study from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has found that regular consumption of dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt, can lower your chances of contracting periodontal disease (also known as gum disease).

Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection in the mouth that affects the gums and jaw. Gum disease results in a loss of teeth and bone, and has been connected to certain cases of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease and osteoporosis.

Results of the study show that adults who consume at least 55 grams of lactic acid a day are less at risk for gum disease. Eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but is essential for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth. Next time you reach for a quick snack, choose some cheese, or a glass of milk, and remember with each bite, and every sip you are preserving your teeth for a lifetime of smiles and good oral health!

What To Do In Case of a Dental Emergency! From Moles Orthodontics

True orthodontic emergencies are very rare, but when they do occur we at Moles Orthodontics are available to you. As a general rule, you should call the office when you experience severe pain or when you have a painful appliance problem that you can't take care of yourself. We’ll be able to schedule an appointment to resolve the problem.

You might be surprised to learn that you may be able to temporarily solve many problems yourself until you schedule an appointment with our office. When working with your appliances, you need to know the names of the parts of your appliances so you are able to identify what part is broken or out of place. After alleviating your discomfort, it is very important that you still call our office as soon as possible to schedule a time to repair the problem. Allowing your appliance to remain damaged for an extended period of time may result in disruptions in your treatment plan.

The following solutions from Moles Orthodontics may help you relieve your discomfort:

Poking Wire

Using a pencil eraser, push the poking wire down or place wax on it to alleviate the discomfort.

Loose Bracket or Band

If your bracket or band is still attached to the wire, you should leave it in place and put wax on it. If the wire comes out entirely, wrap the bracket with a tissue.

Loose Wire

Using a tweezers, try to place your wire back into place. If doing this and using wax does not help, as a last resort use a small fingernail clipper to clip the wire behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened. If your discomfort continues, place wax on it.

Loose Appliance

If your appliance is poking you, place wax on the offending part of your appliance.

Headgear Does Not Fit

Sometimes headgear discomfort is caused by not wearing the headgear as instructed by your orthodontist. Please refer to the instructions provided by your orthodontist. If the facebow is bent, please call our office for assistance. Surprisingly, the headgear may hurt less if it’s worn more, so be sure you’re getting in the prescribed hours.

General Soreness

When you get your braces on, you may feel general soreness in your mouth and teeth may be tender to biting pressures for three to five days. This can be relieved by rinsing your mouth with a warm salt water mouthwash. Dissolve one teaspoonful of salt in 8 ounces of warm water, and rinse your mouth vigorously. Placing Orabase on the affected area may help; this can be found in your local pharmacy. If the tenderness is severe, take aspirin or whatever you normally take for headache or similar pain.

The lips, cheeks and tongue may also become irritated for one to two weeks as they toughen and become accustomed to the surface of the braces. You can put wax on the braces to lessen this. We'll show you how!

Well the results are in! Milwaukee Magazine has released its 2009 listing for the top dentists in the area. They divided the field of dentistry into 7 specialties, one of which is orthodontics.

Dr. Randall Moles was voted one of the top nine orthodontists in the Milwaukee Metropolitan Area!

Milwaukee Magazine polled 1,100 dentists in the region and asked them to select three top dentists overall. The magazine awarded 63 dentists altogether.

Nifty "Eggs"periment from Moles Orthodontics

Summer is drawing near. If the little ones aren’t at camp, you may run out of ideas to keep them occupied. Why not use a fun and simple science experiment to focus their attention for a while? At Moles Orthodontics, we found one that includes a lesson about why it’s important to brush teeth to make plaque go away.

Gather the items you will need for this experiment:

* 1 hard-boiled egg with the shell on
* 12 ounces of Coke, Pepsi or other dark-colored cola
* 1 container large enough to hold the cola and egg
* 1 plastic bowl
* 1 toothbrush
* 1 drop of fluoride toothpaste
* Clean-up supplies

Explain to your child that plaque is a sticky layer of germs that collects on her teeth. If she doesn’t brush, plaque can cause serious problems for her teeth, for example holes in the teeth (cavities) or swollen gums (gingivitis). Tell her that you are going to do an experiment to see how plaque coats her teeth, and why brushing twice a day is important for healthy teeth and gums.

Conduct the experiment:

1. Make the comparison between the white color of the egg and the white color of your child's teeth.

2. Place the egg into the container and pour the cola over it, so that it completely covers the egg.

3. Let the egg sit in the cola for 24 hours.

4. Remove the egg from the cola. The egg will be stained and yellowish.
5. Explain to your child that the colored layer that has appeared on top of the eggshell is just like the layer of plaque that occurs on her teeth.

6. Place the egg in the plastic bowl and give your child the toothbrush with the drop of toothpaste on it.

7. Let her brush the "plaque" off of the egg. The yellowish film will disappear, exposing the white eggshell. Explain that the same thing happens when she brushes her teeth.

Bottled Water Behind Tooth Troubles

As more families turn to bottled water and away from the tap, they may be missing out on one important ingredient that most brands of bottled water fail to include: fluoride.

As of 2005, bottled water is second only to soft drinks as the most popular drink in the United States, beating out milk, juice, and – more significantly – tap water. Between 2001 and 2006, the amount of bottled water sold in the U.S. rose an average of 10% per year. And many dental health specialists point to bottled water’s increased popularity as the culprit behind rising rates of cavities.

Because fluoride helps strengthen teeth, it is an important component of maintaining good oral health. The benefits of fluoride were noticed in the early part of the twentieth century, when researchers found communities with low levels of tooth decay. It turned out that these towns had measurable levels (around 1 part per million) of fluoride in their drinking water.

Beginning in the 1940s, communities have fluoridated their water supplies, and dentists have seen a significant decline in cavities ever since. The American Dental Association endorses both community water fluoridation and the use of fluoride-containing products as a safe means of preventing tooth decay. Between tap water and toothpaste, most of us get sufficient amounts of fluoride.

But if your family avoids fluoridated tap water in favor of ever-more-popular bottled water, you could be missing out on the levels of fluoride necessary to make a difference in your oral health.

If bottled water is your water of choice, check the label to make sure that your brand contains fluoride. As of a 2006 decision, the FDA allows bottled water containing .6 to 1.0 milligrams per liter of fluoride to carry a label stating that fluoridated water may reduce the risk of dental cavities or tooth decay. The ADA has backed this decision.

Of course, simply drinking fluoridated water is not a magic ticket to perfect teeth. To keep your choppers in tip-top shape, it’s important to brush and floss daily and avoid sugary sweets, in addition to maintaining your fluoride intake. It’s true! Smoking is responsible for almost 75% of gum disease in adults; and, similar to smokers, adults who smoke pipes and cigars, as well as those using smokeless tobacco, are just as susceptible to gum disease and other tobacco related health problems.

As soon as you use tobacco products, you become more likely to experience any of these oral-health problems:

Age 7 is the Magic Number for an Orthodontic Check-Up -- Moles Orthodontics

Many parents assume they must wait until a child has all of his or her permanent teeth, only to find that treatment would have been much easier if started earlier. Some orthodontic problems are easier to correct while the jaw is still growing. Consequently, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven.

What’s so great about age seven? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for an orthodontist to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites, and open bites can be detected.

Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and detrimental to good oral hygiene.
